The Humane Society of the United States is involved in more than keeping animals which have been rescued for people to come and adopt. While part of the work conducted by the organization is to help the local organizations in their work, HSUS’s work is usually more than that. Celebrating Animals, Confronting Cruelty is the motto of the organization and represents the complex work that is carried out by the organization.
Today in the world, there are a thousand of animal species. The main objective of the HSUS is to protect, save, and rescue these animals. Although most of the organizations work is carried out in the United States, HSUS has extended to other countries with some its work being to rescue some of the animals in the Ocean. Racing, rodeos, Zoos, circuses, hunting, fashion, aquariums and research are some of the activities that rescued animals have been involved in. The list is however long.
It is the work of HSUS to work with pet owners in ensuring their safety and security and also providing the support to the other local animal shelters HSUS has also been in the forefront in pushing for pushing for pieces of legislation both locally and internationally. These laws are meant to curb animal cruelty. Animals are also victims when a disaster such as when the Tsunami hit the South East Asia in 2004. The Humane Society of the United States was not the first to be involved in the work of helping animals. The Society for the prevention of cruelty of animals is the first known organization know to advocate for animal rights in the U.S. Prior to this organization, there had not been another such organization in the U.S. There are however many other organizations that came up. In 1887, delegates from these organizations agreed to collapse and form the American Humane Association. In 1954 however, there was rift between members and some of those split formed what is now known as HSUS.
The main goal of the HSUS was to ensure that all types of animal cruelty are eliminated in the whole world. Among the first pieces of legislation was the one to fight against mistreatment of animals used for research. The organization has led to passing of many laws that protect animals.
